It is said that the word daffodil probably comes from Affodyle, which is an old English word meaning early-comer. Alternative names for the daffodil are Lent rose and Lent lily, reflecting its blooming period. The first daffodil supposedly flowers on St. David’s Day (March 1st) to honor the saint.

Magnolia

Magnolia gives its name to the family Magnoliceae and commemorates French Botanist, Pierre Magnol. There are about 80 species of trees and shrubs in the genus “Magnolia”. They thrive in fairly rich, moist, peaty or sandy loam but can grow satisfactorily in any garden soil. Its flower is beautiful and one never tires of watching it evolve each year. There is such beauty in the new, pristine bud opening to the brown, fading blossom. And, like a snowflake, no two blossoms are alike.

Its beauty is such that it is the state flower of both Mississippi and Louisiana.

The fresh scented oil distilled from pine needles has powerful antiseptic properties. Both the oil and an infusion of the needles are employed medicinally as decongestants to alleviate sinusitis, bronchitis and catarrh. Pinecones produce the kernels used in Mediterranean cookery. Pine trees grow wild in mountainous areas and are usually in light, sandy or rocky soils. Pines are also grown as ornamentals in parklands.

Dart Frog Candlestick

Living in the tropical rainforests of Surinam, in South America, these colorful little frogs grow to 1-1.5 inches in length. Like all species of the dart frog family, they are diurnal meaning they are more active during the day than at night, which helps potential prey recognize their bright coloring and move to a less dangerous food source! While they can be found near streams among boulders and brush, they lack toe webbing, making them poor swimmers. As they live in small ranges with isolated populations, this species is highly susceptible to human activities and natural factors such as over collection for the pet trade and drought.
