Coral

Corals are marine animals of the class Anthozoa. In Greek mythology the origin of coral goes back to the story of Perseus. Having petrified the sea monster threatening Andromeda, Perseus placed Medusa’s head on the riverbank while he washed his hands. When he recovered her head, he saw that her blood had turned the seaweed into red coral. Thus, the Greek word for coral is ‘Gorgeia’, as Medusa was one of the three Gorgons.

Pod

A pod is a dry dehiscent seed vessel or fruit that is composed of one or more carpels. Carpels are one of the structures in a seed plant comprising the innermost whorl of a flower. Sometimes, you can identify the Family a plant belongs to by the shape of its seedpod. In addition, seeds even in the same seedpod can vary a bit in size and shape. Many seed pods form immediately after the short lived flower drops off and form throughout the growing season. There are hundreds of different seedpods and each is a protective covering for the seeds within.

Radicchio

Radicchio is a mildly bitter tasting leafy vegetable. It is actually Italian Chicory. It usually has white-veined red leaves and has a bitter and spicy taste which mellows when it is grilled or roasted. It is very popular in Italy and is gaining in popularity in the United States. In Italy it is usually eaten grilled in olive oil, or mixed into dishes such as risotto whereas in the United States it is more often eaten raw in salads.

It has been used since ancient times and Pliny the Elder, in Naturalis Historia, praised its medicinal properties claiming it was useful as a blood purifier and an aid for insomniacs.
