Honey Bee

The Honey Bee has been around for millions of years, and is a vital species for our ecosystem.

It is responsible for pollinating 1/3 of our food supply around the world. Honeybees are a highly organized society with various bees having specific roles in their colonies.

A colony consists of aproximately 20,000 – 60,000 honey bees and one queen bee.

The queen is responsible for laying eggs.

All worker bees are female and the only bee that stings, they are responsible for the collection of pollen and nectar.

The drone or the male bee is larger than the female and has no stinger. They do no work at all but are responsible for mating.

The colony works year round but is busiest during the summer months.

Honey bees are disappearing due to pesticide exposure, invasive parasitic mites, and a new virus that targets bees’ immune systems. More research is essential to determine the exact cause of the bees’ distress.

Available in Antique Bronze (AB) and Antique Pewter (AP).

Golden-Winged Warbler Salt and Pepper Eggs

A small, but stunning songbird, the golden-winged warbler has bright patches of yellow on its crown and wings which contrast against its gray feathers with black patches on the throat and face.

Golden-winged warblers occupy overgrown pastures, brushy habitats and briery woodland borders.

Nests are built on or near the ground in dense herbaceous cover usually out of dead leaves and plant fibers.

Eggs are laid between the end of May through the end of June.

Kirtland Warblers

First identified in 1851, this small songbird is rare and highly localized, found only in a few areas of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario.

These warblers are known for constantly bobbing their tails. They nest on the ground under the low-hanging branches of mature Jack Pine trees. The Jack Pines need fire to release and spread their seeds, and the prevention of forest fires kept new Jack Pines from growing.

The bird’s population dwindled dramatically before it was understood that forest fires were good for the trees as well as the birds.

The loss of suitable breeding habitat coupled with their inability to defend nests and young from the Brown-headed Cowbird lead to a significant decline in number and range for the species. However, recent human intervention has given new hope for the survival of these lovely songbirds..

Strawberry Dart Frogs

Living in the tropical rainforests of Surinam, in South America, these colorful little frogs grow to 1-1.5 inches in length.

Like all species of the dart frog family, they are diurnal, meaning they are more active during the day than at night, which helps potential prey recognize their bright coloring and move to a less dangerous food source!

While they can be found near streams among boulders and brush, they lack toe webbing, making them poor swimmers.

As they live in small ranges with isolated populations, this species is highly susceptible to human activities and natural factors such as over collection for the pet trade and drought. .

Bog Frog

This small species of frog inhabits small, cool, clear streams in a narrow range of Western Florida, predominantly on Eglin Air Force Base.

With a distinct “chuckle” of a call, it is believed that they are able to distinguish one another through individual calls.

Combined with their various shades of dark green, brown, and yellow, as well as a lack of webbing on some of their toes, they make a very unusual, but beautiful amphibian.

Discovered as recently as 1982, by Paul Moler, they are designated a “species of special concern” in the state of Florida. There is still much information to be learned about this rare and special frog, if we are to save it from extinction.
